The area boasts a large naval presence with Heritage being centrally located between Pensacola NAS, Eglin AFB, and Whiting Field. These combined bases employ over 25,000 military personnel, and more than 12,000 civilians.
Sacred Heart Hospital
Additional major area demand generators include the Sacred Heart Hospital, which is located within minutes of Heritage, and employs 5,000 people including more than 700 primary care and specialty physicians. Sacred Heart was voted most preferred hospital by area consumers, and was ranked among the top 5 percent of all U.S. hospitals for clinical excellence in 2011 and 2012. This hospital offers a 24-hour Emergency / Trauma Center, the area’s only Children’s Hospital, a Heart and Vascular Institute, Cancer Center, and the region’s leading Stroke Center. In April of 2012, the hospital began a $57 million expansion project of a five-story tower that will add 115 private patient rooms, and over 100 new permanent jobs. Another large area employer, West Florida Hospital, is also located two miles north of Heritage and has over 1,500 employees. Over 600 physicians are affiliated with the hospital, servicing approximately 140,000 patients annually. This activity level created an economic impact of over $163M in 2012.
World-Class Higher Education
Institutions of higher learning also bolster the local economy and serve as not only economic drivers, but also as multifamily demand generators. Heritage is four miles south of the University of West Florida, and two miles west of Pensacola State College, both of which are listed as one of the area’s top 20 employers. The University of West Florida, a mid-sized public university that sits on the third largest campus in the state university system, 1,600 acres, and its campus is a natural preserve that is bordered by two rivers and Escambia Bay. There are currently over 12,800 enrolled students at the university and over 1,231 employees. Pensacola State College has a total enrollment of 11,600 students, 700 employees, and offers more than 120 majors and areas of concentration. Pensacola Christian College is a liberal arts, independent Baptist college located one mile southwest from Heritage. The school has eight academic divisions and also offers graduate degrees.
Airport & 12th
“Airport & 12th”, a $24 million mixed-use development near the Pensacola International Airport is underway, and includes a 127-room Hyatt Place hotel that recently opened in 2013, along with upscale retail, and office space. It will create 235 permanent jobs.
Airbus plans to break ground on a $600 million plant in Mobile, 50 miles west. The aircraft assembly plant will employ over 1,000 people at full capacity; the average annual wage for these jobs will be $41,295. Thousands of additional jobs will be created indirectly at suppliers, and related businesses near the facility. Additionally, the two-year construction period will support 6,000 jobs. By 2018, the plant is expected to reach full capacity, producing 40 to 50 aircraft annually. It is expected to have an annual economic impact of $409 million, supporting demand for 500 new housing units each year.
